Organic and certified coffee: what to ask.

No season lot on this site records an organic or other third-party certification, and we do not claim one. If certification is part of your brief, tell us. This page sets out what to ask any supplier so you can check the claim yourself.

Where we stand.

Our lot records show station, harvest window, process, moisture, water activity, screen distribution and Q score. They do not currently show organic or any other third-party certification. If your brief needs a certified lot, we say whether we can find one and show the certificate. If we cannot, we say so.

Five things to ask any supplier.

  • A copy of the certificate, with the name of the certifying body.
  • The scope: does it cover this producer, this process and this lot, not only the origin in general.
  • The validity dates, and whether they cover the harvest and the shipment date.
  • The document that ties this specific lot to the certificate.
  • Whether you can confirm it directly with the certifier.

Certification is not traceability.

An organic or similar certificate answers one question. The EU deforestation rule asks another, and neither replaces the other. Plot-level geolocation for our lots is in build, and we do not describe it as running. See the regulation page.

What we have not verified.

We have not verified the rules, volumes or availability of any certification scheme in Ethiopia or elsewhere, so we do not state them. When we have checked them against a primary source, they will be added here with the source.

Need a certified lot?

Say which certification you need, the volume and the timing. We tell you what we can show and what we cannot.
